Senate Moves Ahead with Budget Bill

Senate Moves Ahead with Budget Bill

By Andi Anderson

Lawmakers in the Senate have moved forward with a new budget proposal totaling $46.8 billion. This budget, one of the tightest in over a decade, is expected to undergo changes in the coming days, especially after an updated revenue forecast is shared.

Due to limited new revenue for the next two years, the current version of the budget demands tough choices. It increases funding for K-12 education by 2 percent each year, continuing the state’s support for schools. However, other areas have seen reduced allocations. Medicaid will receive funding, but not enough to clear its waiting list, and public and mental health programs will receive less support than in the previous budget.

“We all understand this is going to be a rough budget to go back and explain to all those organizations that didn’t get what they want. Trust me; I’ve been there,” said Senator Liz Brown. “But I also want to say that we’re going to get through this and when we right-size this, I guarantee you the next budget will be better.”

“The question is not whether or not Indiana has the resources,” said Sen. Fady Qaddoura . “It is the question about the priorities.”

This budget reflects a balancing act — aiming to support essential services like education and healthcare, while dealing with financial limits. The Senate and House versions of the bill are similar, both focused on maintaining key programs but with modest increases.

Lawmakers will receive a new revenue projection on Wednesday. This updated data will guide the final changes to the budget before it is passed. Leaders are hopeful that careful planning now will lead to a stronger financial position in future budgets.

This budget bill remains a central focus in legislative discussions, as it impacts residents across the state and shapes future investments in public services.
