The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a second round of financial aid for organic dairy producers under the Organic Dairy Marketing Assistance Program (ODMAP) 2024. This additional $8.7 million aims to help producers manage challenges such as market volatility, rising input costs, and unstable feed supplies.
Combined with the $23 million distributed in the first round, the total ODMAP 2024 payments now exceed $31 million, offering vital relief to the organic dairy sector.
Julia A. Wickard, FSA State Executive Director in Indiana, emphasized the significance of this funding, stating, “This funding gives organic dairy producers critical support as they continue to weather a combination of challenges outside of their control.”
ODMAP 2024 operates by providing cost-share payments to organic dairy producers. These payments are calculated based on marketing costs for organic milk marketed in 2023 or estimated marketing costs for producers who have increased milk production in 2024. This one-time payment helps certified organic dairy operations remain sustainable amid ongoing economic pressures.
Applications for ODMAP 2024 were accepted between September 30 and December 13, with payments designed to address the marketing cost challenges organic producers face. The program aims to bridge financial gaps and support operations until market conditions stabilize.
The USDA’s initiative reflects its commitment to the organic dairy industry, ensuring producers receive timely assistance to maintain their operations. By addressing these critical challenges, the USDA seeks to safeguard the sustainability of organic dairy farming while fostering resilience in this vital agricultural sector.
This financial support highlights the importance of government programs in sustaining agriculture, especially during periods of uncertainty. Organic dairy producers can now focus on long-term growth as they navigate market recovery.
