Veterans Day honors those who have bravely served our country, including those who now contribute to agriculture. Many veterans return to family farms after their service, with approximately one in six farms managed by a veteran.
The values of hard work, dedication, and resilience in the military closely align with those essential in farming, making veterans a valuable part of the agricultural community.
Transitioning from military life to farming offers veterans a meaningful purpose, helping them reconnect with civilian life while serving their communities in a new way.
Veterans bring strong qualities like adaptability and a sense of responsibility to their farms, which benefit not only the agricultural sector but also their local communities.
Recognizing these contributions, the Farm Bureau, in partnership with Farm Credit, has introduced the Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence. This award celebrates veterans who continue to make a positive impact in agriculture and their communities, honoring their enduring dedication.
This year’s inaugural Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence is awarded to retired Colonel Joe Ricker, who served over 30 years in the U.S. Army. After purchasing a 10-acre farm in Indiana, Joe began growing apples and raising bees, establishing his place in agriculture.
He also founded "Veterans IN Farming," an organization with over 1,100 members dedicated to helping Indiana veterans succeed in farming. Joe serves as the National Veteran Outreach Coordinator for the AgrAbility Project at Purdue University, further supporting veterans through agricultural training programs.
Veteran farmers like Col. Joe Ricker embody the spirit of the Veteran Farmer Award, and he will be honored at the American Farm Bureau Convention in January. His commitment exemplifies how veterans continue to serve, helping agriculture thrive and communities grow.
On Veterans Day, let us remember the immense sacrifices our veterans have made and express our gratitude. Their courage has allowed us to live freely, and through their contributions to agriculture, they continue to support our communities. The Farm Bureau extends heartfelt thanks to all veterans for their service and dedication.
