Washington County Farm Reports Bird Flu Outbreak

By Andi Anderson

A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed at a commercial turkey farm in Washington County, Indiana, adding to the growing number of cases in the state. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health announced that 14,075 birds have been infected and placed under quarantine.

Containment Measures in Place

A six-mile control area has been established, covering Washington, Jackson, and Scott Counties. Infected flocks are euthanized, facilities are sanitized, and farms are eventually repopulated to prevent further spread.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun assured that multiple state agencies, including the Indiana Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Department of Health (IDOH), are working together to manage the outbreak. The DNR is monitoring how the disease affects wildlife and hunting, while the IDOH oversees human health risks.

Bird Flu Impact on Indiana Poultry

Officials confirm that avian flu poses no risk to human health but advise residents near affected areas to monitor for flu-like symptoms. The current strain has already led to the loss of nearly 45 million egg-laying hens nationwide in the past year.

Indiana, a major poultry producer, has reported seven million infected birds since January. As outbreaks continue, poultry farms are urged to strengthen biosecurity measures to protect flocks and prevent further losses.
