Indiana Governor Responds to Growing Bird Flu Outbreak

By Andi Anderson

Indiana is facing a growing bird flu outbreak, with over six million birds infected since the start of the year. Governor Mike Braun has reassured farmers and residents that state agencies are closely monitoring the situation.

State Response and Health Precautions

The Indiana Department of Agriculture is working with the Board of Animal Health to keep poultry producers informed, while the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is tracking wildlife impact. The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) has confirmed no human cases in the state but is monitoring farm workers for symptoms.

A recent Ohio case of H5N1 in a county bordering Indiana raised concerns, but Indiana officials state their containment measures remain unchanged. Workers on impacted farms use protective equipment and undergo regular health screenings to prevent potential transmission.

Scientific Concerns and Monitoring

Virologist Christopher Stobart warns that the H5N1 virus is mutating, with only one or two genetic changes needed for human-to-human transmission. Studies suggest the virus may have already spread from dairy cows to humans, as some veterinarians show antibodies for H5N1 infections.

The CDC reports 68 human cases of bird flu globally since 2024, with one fatal case in Louisiana. Despite the risks, experts confirm that cooked poultry and pasteurized dairy remain safe for consumption.

Preventing Further Spread

Indiana officials continue to stress biosecurity measures to prevent further outbreaks. Poultry farms are urged to follow strict sanitation protocols, while scientists call for increased transparency and monitoring to prevent a larger crisis.
