INDIANA WEATHER

Early finish for Indiana soybean harvest

Early finish for Indiana soybean harvest

By Andi Anderson

Indiana’s soybean harvest has concluded ahead of schedule, with crops benefiting from the warm and rainy weather last week. According to Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician for USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office, the warm conditions and rainfall helped improve soil moisture and boost crop development.

The average temperature for the week was 47.6 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 6.1 degrees above the seasonal average. Rainfall levels statewide reached 1.07 inches, 0.32 inches above the average.

There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending November 17, allowing farmers to make significant progress in harvesting. The soybean harvest finished well ahead of the five-year average, providing an efficient close to the season.

Corn harvest progress also approached completion, with 97 percent of the corn harvested by week’s end.

The steady rainfall and warmer-than-usual temperatures positively impacted the winter wheat crop, helping it reach emergence levels in line with the five-year average.

Winter wheat condition also showed improvement, with 64 percent of the crop now rated as good to excellent, indicating a promising outlook for the crop as winter approaches.

In addition to harvest activities, farmers focused on fall tillage, weed control, fertilizer, and manure applications, as well as preparing fields for the winter months. These efforts ensure that the soil remains in optimal condition for the next growing season.

Overall, the recent weather conditions in Indiana have contributed to a successful end to the soybean and corn harvests while supporting healthy winter wheat growth.

Farmers are well-prepared for winter, with fieldwork progressing smoothly and crops showing favorable development.
