The 81st Annual Conference of Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) was a time to celebrate the achievements of Hoosiers and organizations dedicated to conservation. Awards were presented to individuals, farms, and groups for their outstanding contributions to protecting Indiana's natural resources.
Earth Team Volunteer Award:
- Marilyn Ellicott (Newton County): Retired data analyst extraordinaire, Ellicott volunteered over 130 hours supporting the Newton County SWCD and NRCS team, organizing data, participating in outreach, and training.
SWCD Employee Career Development Program Recognition:
- 13 SWCD staff members: Recognized for completing the Pilot Career Development Program, demonstrating their commitment to professional growth and excellence in conservation.
Conservation Farmer of the Year Award with Career Conservation Distinction:
- Cain's Homelike Farms (Montgomery County): Eighth-generation farm recognized for exemplary stewardship, implementing lifelong conservation practices that protect soil health and wildlife habitat. They also educate young minds, hosting 4th grade Field Days for over 400 students annually.
Friend of Conservation Awards:
- Non-profit category: Help the Hellbender Project (Purdue University): Combines research, outreach, and a rearing program to improve hellbender conservation efforts.
- Individual category: Johnny Klemme (Warren County): Produced the documentary film "Land Values," showcasing the importance of conservation and its success in the Big Pine Creek watershed.
District Showcase Awards:
- Kosciusko County SWCD: Urban Healthy Soils Working Group: Promotes healthy soil practices in urban areas.
- Montgomery County SWCD: Clean Water Indiana grant funding success: Leveraged grant funding to create a Program Coordinator position, demonstrating its effectiveness and securing permanent funding from the county.
- Newton County SWCD: Student Conservation Internship Program: Provides internship opportunities for high school students, fostering future conservation leaders.
Supervisor of the Year Award:
- Mike Norman (Fulton County): Dedicated board member for over 30 years, passionate about conservation education and actively involved in SWCD events.
President's Award:
- Ray Chattin (Knox County) and Les Zimmerman (Vermillion County): Recognized for their collaborative campaign securing over $6 million in additional funding for the Clean Water Indiana program, strengthening conservation efforts across the state.
This ceremony showcased the incredible dedication and impact of Hoosiers working towards a more sustainable future for Indiana. Their efforts in conservation not only protect our land and water resources but also educate future generations and contribute to the economic well-being of our communities.
