Indiana has launched a new rebate program to help residents make their homes more energy efficient. The Indiana Office of Energy Development is offering more than $180 million in home energy rebates. This initiative aims to help Hoosiers lower their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.
The program is open to all residents—homeowners, renters, and landlords. Rebates can be used for various energy-saving improvements, such as air sealing, insulation, water heaters, and electric stoves.
The amount of the rebate depends on income, household size, and expected energy savings from the upgrade.
Mark Kresowik, senior policy director with the nonprofit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, highlighted the importance of the program. “These rebates are going to help people lower their energy costs, lower their bills at this particular moment when so many — you know, a third of households in this country — struggle to keep the lights on,” he said.
The rebates are expected to support not just households, but the state’s economy too. Kresowik noted that Indiana currently lacks strong utility-based energy-efficiency incentives, and this program could create new jobs and opportunities.
“This has the potential to build an entire ecosystem of contractors and jobs that are working with this program,” he said.
The funding for Indiana’s rebate program comes from the federal Inflation Reduction Act. However, there is concern about the future of energy-efficiency support, as some members of Congress have proposed cutting federal energy-efficiency tax credits.
Still, this new rebate program gives Indiana residents a chance to make affordable, energy-smart upgrades while supporting local jobs and reducing emissions. Interested residents are encouraged to apply soon to take full advantage of the funding.
