Tom Wesner, CEO of Rose Acre Farms, testified before the Senate Agriculture Committee, advocating for bird flu vaccination to protect poultry farms.
His company, one of Indiana’s largest egg producers, recently lost 2.6 million birds due to an outbreak and believes vaccines are necessary to prevent further losses.
Wesner emphasized that other countries already use vaccines to combat bird flu. He pointed out that nearly 40% of exported US chicken goes to nations that also vaccinate their poultry. He urged policymakers to collaborate with these countries to protect the industry without disrupting trade.
Since 2015, Rose Acre Farms has lost 10 million birds to avian influenza, with six million affected in just the past two months. Wesner stressed that the industry needs an offensive strategy rather than a reactive one.
His testimony supports USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins’ $1 billion initiative to fight bird flu, which includes $100 million dedicated to strategies for protecting flocks nationwide.
Meanwhile, another outbreak was confirmed in Jay County, where 214,000 egg-laying hens will be depopulated. The rising number of infections highlights the urgent need for stronger preventive measures.
Wesner’s advocacy for vaccination aligns with broader efforts to ensure the stability of the poultry industry. With rising concerns over egg prices and trade disruptions, lawmakers may need to consider his call for proactive disease management.
