Future of AI Literacy in Higher Education

Future of AI Literacy in Higher Education

By Andi Anderson

Artificial intelligence is becoming a major part of daily life in universities. It influences classrooms, research projects, library systems, and even how institutions create their policies. As AI grows more advanced, colleges are asking important questions about how to use it responsibly and how to prepare students and faculty for the future.

A recent event titled “AI Literacy and Higher Education—Where We Go from Here” aims to address these questions. It features Dr. Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, an Assistant Professor at the Information School at the University of Washington.

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at WALC 2007. The timing of the event is 2:00–3:30 PM. If you are interested, you can register here- https://d1lf8.share.hsforms.com/2vzl1kFR9ThqLzLB_RX2Eww

His work focuses on artificial intelligence, cultural heritage, and AI learning across college campuses. The event encourages students, educators, and librarians to think about how AI should be used in educational environments.

The lecture highlights the many opportunities that AI brings to universities. AI tools can support learning, improve research efficiency, and help institutions manage large amounts of information.

At the same time, Dr. Lee explains the risks involved, such as misinformation, bias, or unfair use of technology. Understanding both benefits and risks is an important part of building AI literacy.

Another major theme is the role of libraries. Modern university libraries do more than store books. They guide students in using digital tools, evaluating information, and understanding new technologies. Because of this, Dr. Lee believes libraries are in a strong position to lead conversations about responsible AI use.

The event also examines how universities are creating AI policies. Many institutions are still deciding how AI should be used in assignments, research, and communication. Dr. Lee’s talk encourages colleges to work together to build clear guidelines that help everyone use AI wisely.

This discussion is meant to inspire campuses to think about their next steps. By improving AI literacy and creating thoughtful policies, universities can prepare their communities for a future where artificial intelligence plays a major role in education.
