Hoosier Solar brings 410 MW Solar Power to Starke County

By Andi Anderson

Hoosier Solar has successfully permitted 410 MW of utility-scale solar energy projects in Starke County, Indiana. The two sites, North Bend and Starke Central, span over 2,500 acres near Bass Lake and Knox, with the capacity to power more than 53,000 homes.

The projects involve 16 landowners and 21 participating neighbors, offering significant economic benefits. Approved Economic Development Agreements (EDA) will generate over $1 million annually for Starke County, supporting infrastructure and community needs. Additionally, $150,000 is allocated for EMS and fire services, while property taxes are projected to decrease by $285,500 annually.

To ensure meaningful community impact, Hoosier Solar established the Hoosier Solar Community Fund in April 2024 with the Starke County Community Foundation, investing $105,000 for scholarships and local donations. Contributions include $58,000 for rebuilding the Starke County 4H Fairgrounds swine barn and $134,000 for local programs like the Starke County Youth Club and various charitable foundations.

Landowners and residents have expressed enthusiasm for the project’s long-term benefits. Linda Bell, a local farmer, highlighted the alignment of solar technology with preserving family land and supporting the community. Similarly, Mike Pacilio, a lifelong Starke County resident, emphasized the projects’ positive economic and environmental impact.

Hoosier Solar CEO Steven Lichtin stated, “Our Starke County projects will deliver clean energy, strengthen the local economy, and create lasting benefits for the community. We are grateful for the support from residents and County officials.”

These solar farms symbolize a step forward in renewable energy, community development, and economic growth, reflecting a shared commitment to a sustainable future for Starke County.
