Indiana poultry producers have made a significant impact on local communities in 2024 through generous contributions of food and funds. Recognized during the 77th annual Governor’s Poultry Presentation at the Indiana Statehouse, their efforts addressed food insecurity while strengthening the state’s agriculture sector.

Throughout the year, Indiana’s poultry farmers and businesses donated 250,000 pounds of nutrient-rich duck, turkey, and chicken meat to food banks and organizations across the state.

They supplied one million dozen chicken eggs and 50,000 dozen duck eggs to Hoosiers in need. Beyond these substantial food donations, poultry companies contributed over $120,000 to not-for-profit and charitable organizations, demonstrating their commitment to community welfare.

Governor Eric Holcomb praised the producers, stating, “Indiana poultry producers truly embody the generosity of the Hoosier spirit. Their contributions highlight their dedication to feeding their neighbors and supporting agriculture in Indiana.”

Indiana is a leader in the poultry sector, ranking first in duck production, third in egg production, and fourth in turkey production nationwide.

This thriving industry significantly contributes to Indiana’s economy, generating over $18.34 billion in economic activity and providing jobs for nearly 50,000 people, including direct and allied industry roles.

The poultry products showcased at the presentation were donated to Second Helpings, a hunger relief organization in Indianapolis. This annual event, organized by the Indiana State Poultry Association (ISPA), celebrates decades of generosity and acknowledges the industry’s role in addressing food insecurity.

ISPA President Becky Joniskan emphasized the importance of protein in healthy diets, expressing pride in the industry’s ability to share nutritious products with communities. Indiana’s poultry producers exemplify responsibility and kindness, ensuring their contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.

The event reaffirmed the essential role of Indiana’s poultry industry in enhancing both agriculture and community well-being.
