Purdue University celebrated its leading researchers during the 2024 Excellence in Research Award Lectures held on May 5. Hosted annually by Karen Plaut, executive vice president for research, this prestigious event showcases breakthrough work by recipients of Purdue’s highest research honors.
Each year, the university presents three major awards: the Herbert Newby McCoy Award, the Arden L. Bement Jr. Award, and the Lu Ann Aday Award. These awards highlight the contributions of faculty who have made significant impacts in science, engineering, and human health.
This year’s Lu Ann Aday Award was presented to David Purpura, professor of human development and family science, for his important work in understanding childhood learning and development.
Dongyan Xu, the Samuel D. Conte Professor of Computer Science and director of CERIAS (Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security), received the Arden L. Bement Jr. Award. His contributions to cybersecurity and technology research were highly praised during the ceremony.
Roger Wiens, professor of earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences, was announced as the recipient of the Herbert Newby McCoy Award, which recognises outstanding work in the physical sciences. He will deliver his award lecture later this year in September as part of the Westwood Lecture Series.
Karen Plaut expressed pride in Purdue’s research community, stating that these awards reflect the university’s strong commitment to innovation, knowledge, and real-world impact.
The Excellence in Research Awards event highlights how dedicated researchers across disciplines are shaping the future and driving discovery. It continues to inspire students, staff, and the broader academic world.
